The Clare French Film by Peter Bromley and 1968 Film Group, 2022
Clare’s reductive, monochrome practice considers the constructed, protean nature of human systems of meaning. This takes place primarily through her investigation into the constitution of painting; physically, materially and art-historically, which aims to complicate modes of making and assumed conceptual certainties. Situated within Modernism and Post-Minimalism, Clare develops her work according to arbitrary rules or patterns that remain flexible while operating an internal logic.
Peter Bromley's documentary on the Artist Clare French highlights French's unique working art practice in her Thamesmead and Belfast based studios. Interviews with French explain how her art comes together and why.
